Full time study

If you want to stay in education you can study at:

  • Streetly Sixth Form or another school Sixth Form

  • A Further Education (FE) College

  • A Specialist College, these usually focus on particular subjects such as dance or agriculture

Each school or College is likely to offer a range of different subjects, courses, and learning styles. Some colleges offer part-time courses, or run evening or weekend classes – often called flexible learning – so it’s worth finding out more to discover what will suit you best.

Look on School and College websites to find out about Open Days where you can visit the college, find out about the courses on offer and speak to staff and students. Do your research and find out what the courses you're interested in involve such as the topics you will cover, amount of exams and coursework. You should also ask what previous students have gone on to do next.

It's important to check out the application process for any Colleges that interest you. The earlier you apply the better! Some Sixth Forms and specialist colleges have deadline dates so check for these.

You can explore and compare courses at hundreds of schools and colleges on UCAS Progress.

What to study

A-levels tend to focus on academic subjects and are one of the main routes to university. Courses usually take two years and you sit your exams at the end of the course. See Choosing A-level subjects for more help and information.

Vocational qualifications are more practical and provide you with the knowledge and skills needed for certain jobs and types of work. Examples of qualifications you could study include:

  • BTEC - a vocational course which aims to develop skills for the workplace tailored to the sector you are studying. Example courses include Beauty, Construction, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Travel and Tourism

  • T-levels - a new vocational qualification which is 80% College based and 20% workplace based

  • NVQ - a work-based qualification which recognises the skills and knowledge a person needs to do a job. The candidate needs to demonstrate and prove their competency in their chosen role or career path.
