Key Stage 4: GCSE Child Development
2 Year Course (Years 10 and 11) – GCSE AQA
This course involves the study of children from conception until five years old in terms of their physical needs, emotional, social, intellectual and physical development. A piece of coursework must be done towards the end of Year 10 and into Year 11 which combines research into a Child Development issue and observation of a child aged between 0 – 5 years. It is important that students spend time on their coursework as it accounts for 50% of their final grade. Topics covered in this subject include:
- The family and preparation for family life
- Pregnancy and Birth
- The newborn baby
- The physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of the child
- Professionals who work in child care
âAssessment is through regular tests, assessment tasks and mini projects. Students are also given the opportunity to self assess and peer assess work.
Child development is an ideal subject for pupils who would like a career working with children in the future.
