Child Development

Intent: To give students in insight about the process of pregnancy and what care is needed before and after the birth, as well as the development needs of a child until the age of 5. Students review and investigate issues, plan, organise their time and develop literacy and research skills when designing and creating solutions to tasks. Students understand the aspects that impact upon a childs development in the first 5 years, including physical, intelectual, emotional and social effects.


The course:

OCR Level 1\2 Cambridge Nationals Child Development


This qualification is for learners aged 14-16 who wish to develop applied knowledge and practical skills in child development. It is designed with both practical and theoretical elements, which will prepare students for further qualifications in Child Care, Health and Social Care, Psychology, Sociology and Biology.

All students will study three mandatory topics as follows:

  • R018: Health and well-being for child development (Written examination)
  • R019: Understand the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years (Coursework)
  • R020: Understand the development of a child from birth to five years (Coursework)

Assessment is via regular tets, assessment tasks and mini projects.
